Blues Twilight Album Cover JAZZ Times- Jakob Bækgaard (December 2007) Getting an endorsement from a living legend like Freddie Hubbard seems like a dream situation for every aspiring trumpeter and here it is, written out in bold types. Hubbard has written the liner notes for Richard Boulger's second recording as a leader, Blues Twilight, and he is more than thrilled about Boulger's playing, calling him “an impassioned improviser” with “great chops and facility on the horn.”

From AMG Reviews:

The Calling Album Cover The first album as a leader for trumpeter Richard Boulger is pretty impressive. The music ranges from boppish to spacy ("Cosmic Interplay") with Boulger often displaying the influence of Freddie Hubbard. He teams up with tenor saxophonist Kris Jensen (who doubles on flute), utilizes two different rhythm sections (including one with pianist Aaron Goldberg and bassist Reuben Rogers), and welcomes Eddie Henderson to three numbers, holding his own with the older trumpeter. Paulette Barnes has a guest vocal on an effective version of "Please Send Me Someone to Love," and Boulger's originals are excellent. Most impressive are his appealing tone and versatility. Recommended. - Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Steve Davis Not that any of the selections here would be out of place on one of his hard bop sessions, but the approach here puts more emphasis on the expanded rhythm section. An odd-metered version of "Bye, Bye Blackbird," retitled "Black Byrd, 'Bye 'Bye," exemplifies the band's approach. But while the concept is interesting, only during Richard Boulger's trumpet solo on the closing track, "Missing Piece," does the band approach liftoff. Still, Davis' horn playing speaks to his close listening to the work of J.J. Johnson and Curtis Fuller. He spins out smooth, logically developed, bop-based lines. Pianist Warren Byrd, with his knack for motivic variation and his command of pianistic devices, provides the most compelling solos.

"Richard Boulger is a hell of a trumpet player, composer, and arranger. He is my first call trumpet player and I like his attitude." Jaimoe

Autumn - "I think the sound of a trumpet playing in a New York City alley at 4:00am nicely mirrors the melancholy mood of the piece."
