Blues Twilight Trumpeter/composer Richard Boulger was born in North Adams, Massachusetts. At the age of 6 he was first introduced to the trumpet by his father, who was his first teacher and mentor and taught him the importance of expressing one's "heart and spirit" through the horn.

“Richard Boulger is a trumpet player with a big fat sound, great chops, and most importantly lots of soul.”
- Randy Brecker

At 18 he moved to Hartford, Connecticut where he enrolled at the Hartt School of Music and studied with alto saxophonist and Jazz master Jackie McLean. In 1996 he made his debut recording with his Hartt School associate, trombonist Steve Davis (The Moon Knows, Brownstone recordings).

Richard continued his formal education, earning a Masters degree in 1997 from Rutgers University, where he studied with trumpet "guru" Professor William Fielder. He has since continued his search for knowledge, studying with such jazz icons as trumpeters Freddie Hubbard  (click here to continue)

Paying Tribute to a Master

Freddie Hubbard was a master innovator in every sense of the word -- as a trumpet player, improviser and composer.

Even more so, he had the rare ability to play with pure heart and soul.

He touched each of us in ways that only true spirit could.

Listening to Freddie is like listening to all of life singing its song.....

As a friend, Freddie was always kind, deeply supportive and quick to share his keen insight and vast experiences on and away from the horn.

Rest in peace Freddie, your Fire burns on in all of us.RB 12/30/08
